Since foreigner quotas vary drastically from league to league, this list may help to get a quick overview:
- Italy - 4 on the court
- Poland - 3 on the court (not counting Ukrainian players)
- Russia - 2
- Germany - no quota
- France - 6
- China - no quota (since season 22/23 - before that: 2)
- Japan - 1 (+1 Asian Player)
- Korea - 1 (+1 Asian Player)
- Turkey - 3 on the court
- Finland - 4
- Brazil - 3 (but not from the same nationality)
- Spain - 4 on the court
- Sweden - 3 on the court
- Switzerland - 4
- Indonesia - 2
- Romania - 5 on the court
- Greece - 3
- Portugal - no quota
- Qatar - 3
- Saudi Arabia - 3
- Oman - 1
- Kuwait - 1
- Bahrain - 1
- Azerbaijan - 5
- Denmark - no quota
- Austria - 5
- Thailand - 2 (+1 ASEAN/SEA Player)
Let me hear your thoughts on which foreigner quota do you think works the best?
Let me know if u got additional information! I'll keep it updated.
Wrong about Japan
Japan : 1 foreigner player + 1 Asian player
men's side: Asian player = Asean coutries + China + Korea
women's side: Asian player = Asean coutries only
@HappyWithVolleyball Thanks for the info! Never heard about that ;) Is it the same in Korea?
@HappyWithVolleyball Very interesting. I know that there is a similar situation in the Russian league. :)
@Hidesada In the 2022/23 season, players from Ukraine will be included in the team as Poles. They will not be counted towards the foreigners limit. TAURONLiga
@RadosławDubik The fact that you said TAURONLiga means that it will be only in womens league or also in mens? Do you have a source or is it not published yet? :)
@Hidesada The information is certain and concerns the women's league - Tauron Liga
In China, in the women's volleyball league in the last league season 2021/2022, there could be 1 person from abroad on the court.
In Brazil, you can only have three foreigners on the team, but these three can't be of the same nationality.
In Sweden: 3 Foreigners on the court
@Hidesada in Indonesian Proliga, 2 foreigners
@BudhiW @DriesHoeyberghs @Laais @CHN_HRQ_FAN @RadosławDubik good job guys! Thank you for all the information!
Romania no quota
France and Azerbaijan - 5 (at least 1 national player)
Swiss - 4 (at least two national players)
Greece - 3
China - 1-2 (varies every season)
@WoohyongChoi France is 5 on the court? Is that for ligue A and B? Roster is unlimited then? Thanks!
@SeanMcKay France requires actually only one French player on the court. But this year Le Cannet choose to play with 7 foreigners and to pay a fine for every match. That raises ethical questions in France.
Italy - 4 on the court
Poland - 3 on the court
Turkey - 3 on the court
The foreign quota works best in these three countries. @WoohyongChoi @Hidesada
Qatar - 3 ( one ot them must have Qatari recedency and regestered previously )
Oman - 1
bahrain -1
saudi arabia - 3
kuwait - 1
UAE -1
In Spanish's Superliga you can have 4 foreigners on the court.
France : 1 french on court
@Biaim ???
In Portugal there's no quota, which I think undermines Portuguese young players' development
Hi all,
can someone advise about following leagues foreigner quota
Italy - League B1 and B2, C and D
Croatia - League A1 and A2
Slovenia - League A1 and A2
Thanks
Sweden top women's league, only 3 on the court.
I heard that Korea is going to open 2nd quota to Asian countries similar to what Japan does. Don't know how true is it.
Denmark no restrictions
Romania has 4 foreign player quota (or at least 2 Romanian player on court)
@doongie1015 are u sure? as far as i know there is no quote in romania
@Hidesada yes I'm 100%, currently following the Romanian league
They had 5 foreigner limit previously, this season decreased it to 4 foreigner max
okey thank you for the information!
@Hidesada no problem and thanks for the list
It's very useful, hope to see one next season too
@doongie1015 yeah i always wondered why there is no such a thing already published. I guess the list will be up to date as long as I or other users provide information about changes or new leagues ?
@Hidesada hi sorry, one update for the Romanian league!
Rather than having a limit on foreign players, there is a limit of having minimum 2 Romanian players.
Previously I was under the impression that it was 2/6 players on court, but it is actually 2/7 players (incl benched Li/MB), so 5 foreign players are allowed (given that the benched player is Romanian)
This is my source :)

@Hidesada re: your list up top … Japan might more accurately be “1 (+1 ASEAN player)” because the +1 can't be from China or Korea …
[edit] oops, I guess the men's is different, as explained by @Happy
@Hidesada Will you be using the same list for 2023/24?
Korean league now allows 1 foreigner + 1 asian player (total 2 foreigners)
@doongie1015 thank you for the information! Yes i try to keep it up to date :)
@Hidesada for Thailand, they just started doing 2+1 for 23/24 and onwards.
2 foreign players and 1 ASEAN/SEA player.
Austria: 1 (so one player from Austria has to be always on the court) → counts for both, men's and women's league
@AmerZecevic @mamamiyeah thank u for the information!
In Turkish League 3 on the court and 1 on the bench.
@VolleyTurco Wrong. 2 on the bench. And outside of the match squad is unlimited.
@AlpÇifci @VolleyTurco so 3 on the court and 2 on the bench?
@Hidesada Correct. Teams can have a maximum of 5 foreigners in their 14-man match squad(roster). 3 on the court and 2 on the bench. There may be unlimited number of foreigners outside the match squad. For example, Vakıfbank currently has 6 foreigners. Every week, one of these 6 foreigners cannot make the match squad.
@AlpÇifci alright thanks for the information!
Any updates for this year?
@AndreCastro Not that I know of but maybe some other Volleybox members got new informations?
