Quick news: Super cup finals. Trentino triumphum, champions of super cup after 8 year.

The Italian supercup ended last night with Trentino returning to become the champions of the Supercup after 8 years of drought.. Despite a superb showing during the semifinals against Lube, Monza was unable to capitalise on the streak of winning against top tier Italian league teams. 

During the first two sets, Trentino was very dominant in the match. Trentino continued to start the game without an opposite on floor, with Kaziyski, Michieletto and Lavia all outside hitters starting though the wing position with Lavia starting opposite of the setter Sbertoli. Trentino’s setup reduced a lot of positional movement throughout the match, because all three of the hitters were able to hit through the left and right side of the court and depending on the rotation they were in, different receivers will be out of the receiving lineup. Trentino was very dominant on blocking, 14 blocks over 3 blocks from Monza. However, Monza was slightly better at serving with 10 aces over 6 aces from Trentino.The best scorer of the match Grozer, despite a slow start in the first set, was really strong through the latter 3 sets. Grozer scored 22 with 17 attacks at 28.6% attacking efficiency with 5 aces. Kaziyski came close second with 21 points 17 attacks at 41.2 percent attack efficiency with 3 blocks and one ace.

Concluding the Italian super cup tournament, the stand out team definitely is Tretino. With their financial struggles and losing major top tier players, like Gianelli, Lucarelli and Abdel- Aziz, Trentino still managed to build a solid team. Certainly, players like Sbertoli, Michieletto, Lavia and Kaziyski are far from weak. The preparation coming from the national team season for Italy showed in the match, the connection between Lavia, Michieletto and Sbertoli is very strong. In addition with Linsnac and Podrascanin, both are top of the line middles in the game, setting up the victorious route for Trentino. As for Monza,  they are definitely beating above its weight. Winning against Modena and Lube should really give them a confidence boost throughout the season. Even though some of the players from Monza are not as well known, they are great players as well. The part that this super cup really shows is that mid tier Italian clubs might be slightly closer in terms of performance with top tier teams. It is still early in the club season, and teams still have time to build up for the regular season, mid- season Cup, and other continental championships, but top teams from Italy isn’t as dominant as it’s once was and the mid- tier team are on the raise and make Italian league a much more competitive space
