[Closed] Transfers. Add optional field 'T-shirt' number

When adding a new transfer for the player, no ‘T-shirt’ field present.

Actual result: No ‘T-shirt’ field. As result, it needs to open the team/rosters page to add it after adding the player transfer.

Expected: Field exists → The player is added with ‘T-shirt’ number to team roasters → No need to go to the team page to make additions

Sure, but there's probably some “law” that would claim it makes it complicated 😀

I kid our captain, but think of the situation where a “transfer proof” is some gossip blog that “has learned” a player is going to play somewhere. Do they know the jersey #?

Personally, I'd like to add the jersey number field and make it mandatory. That's when it's a transfer, but then when folks use gossip sites as transfer proofs they'd just make up some number.

@sitenoise all of the ‘Not verified’ transfers are going through moderation before dropping to Done deals. Am I right about next? If the transfer is confirmed as valid → we know the jersey# but not vice versa.

The platform cannot control if the player really got the jersey#. As a result, no matter - optional or mandatory jersey# field will be.

jersey# can be checked only in the moderation stage.

Cons:

  1. Moderator has +1 check to overall - jersey# - when the transfer is confirmed as valid. Until the transfer confirmed, no matter what jersey# was put by a user.

@VitaliiLatysh Most of the transfers are confirmed by volleyball or sport specialised websites, days or weeks before it is confirmed by the club. So I'd say that in a majority of transfers we don't know the jersey number when it's becoming official for the first time.

@Sherlock good point. Did not know about that. Thanks.

Interesting, actually ‘most of the transfers’ confirmed by moderators, but actually, they are not valid until the club confirmed.

@VitaliiLatysh Yes but it depends. When a good source announces a transfer we can consider it as official even if the club didn't confirm anything.

Also in the case of transfers that are made months before the beginning of a competition, for example in May, probably no one knows yet the jersey number, even the club.

Yes, that's the Hick’s Law.

If the transfer is confirmed as valid → we know the jersey

That's not true.

Good. I see now. Due to uncertainty, it can cause more troubles than benefits. Will mark as ‘Closed’. Thank you all for your participation!

I'd just like to add that, for me, since these links live on at a person's profile page, they serve a purpose of being a link to their club home page (if that's what it is), which, again, for me, is more useful than a link to a sports magazine or a gossip blog announcing what they “have learned”.

On the other hand, some of the links to a sports magazine are interesting bits that provide history or context of the transfer.

I have used “League” announcements of transfers (which are as official as you can get but they offer nothing but name and team on a spreadsheet), as the ‘transfer proof’ and then after the player shows up on their team page, I've gone back and deleted the connection and re-added it so I can change the link.

I doubt anyone else would do that, or care if it was done, or find it useful. but this is a reason why I wish we had a timeline of links and info that didn't get buried in #hashtag fed twitter feeds of movies and whatnot.

I only hope when the players extended their contract with clubs, the jersey number should automatic added. It's exhausted to add jersey number one by one each season.

@HappyWithVolleyball cannot agree more. total nightmare.

there can be some automation mechanism for this process. something needs to get this jersey# from the official club site AND update the added player jersey# field. One of the variants → web crawler for the official volley club site to store the players in separate DB and keep it up to date. And use this DB to update any player data. And after that, we do not need to add players manually anymore. Good direction for a small inner project, isn't it?

@Volleybox what do you think?

@HappyWithVolleyball  My initial reaction to your suggestion was a fist pump YEAH! and then I remembered all the (Japanese) teams whose players change jersey numbers every year. Certainly all the school kids do it but also, for example, Toray Arrows do it based on age of the players, so I dunno, but do agree it's a bit of a pain to re-enter all of them but it pales in comparison to this 😀

One cool thing that might help is the new “Roster Photos w/ Rosters” feature. If you know the players and have a roster photo showing their numbers you can enter them there. I've used that often recently

@VitaliiLatysh  I've only recently become acquainted with the dataproject web site. It looks to me that you've have to pay to suck data from them? Outside that I can't imagine team web sites have an API to get data from, but my world is very limited.

@sitenoise  high school teams change numbers frequently because the senior graduated and the freshmen take their numbers. But in clubs team, it's mostly stable unless you become a star player, you can choose the same number as national team, at least on men's side.

Every season to reentry each player numbers is huge workload.

@HappyWithVolleyball  I support having them auto-carry forward. It's no difference for me to fix the ones it gets wrong than it is to input from scratch, and it will get some portion of them correct. Let's do it!

On the girls's side the kids do it by/for seniority/awesomeness. No freshman comes in and grabs #1 😀 I've had fun watching some of favorite players go from 17→11→7→ drumroll

@Volleybox  So could it be possible that we can automatic fill in jersey number once players extend to their contracts with clubs.

@HappyWithVolleyball @sitenoise Ok, such mechanism will be implemented. It will be ready before starting 2021/22 season, maybe earlier.

@Volleybox Is this still on the roadmap? Or does it depend on how players are moved forward? I'm using the “Where they will play in season 2021/22” to confirm for next season and the jersey numbers aren't carrying forward

@sitenoise yes, task is still waiting in the backlog.

Currently the task for translating a website into the different languages has the highest priority for now. Copying a jersey numbers will be implemented after finishing translation task (it could be beginning of the May).
