This should have been called as an illegal block. FIVB Rules 14.6.2: "A back-row player or a Libero completes a block or participates in a completed block is a blocking fault." The former of that essentially says they (the back row blocker) can't touch the ball (because the minute contact is made, it's considered "completed", which is forbidden of a back row player), and the latter says they can't participate in a completed block, which is anyone else "legally" touching the ball above the height of the net. Long story short, illegal play, regardless of the ball being contacted by the 4th person or not.

It is not enough for you I can't say more...They teach in University thet the block attempt is fault too...Now i was thinking that this rule was changed. For this i was askinkg a referee who told me this same... BTW Keep searching maybe you'll find something. Regards

I know what "quote" means. Dont know why you think i wouldnt?! :-) To be honest, thats not enough for me. Every source - german and english - i could find to this topic, tells me that the blocking attempt is allowed and just the touch is a fault. Even our offical national rules explanations says specific that the blocking attempt from a back-row player is allowed! The problem with the 4 blockers is clear but if you see something like this just hit the block. Then its definetly a fault... ;-)

KoMoDo "Quote" is "Zitat" in german?
back to topic: I know that beecause i was really courious about this situation and i was looking situation like this one in my papers from University (coach volleyball course) more I askinkg my friend who is referee. So when you jump to block like 4-th one - this is a blocking attempt and this is a fault.
P.S. We can imagine this situation simple. When you are attacking the ball and you have 4 blockers front of you is more difficult to attack. More net space is covered. Cheers

Could you give me some rules quote? I am always a little sceptical about half knowledge thesis without any evidence. As I said, I think its possible that the blocking attempt is a fault too but I couldnt find any rule about this...

Quote (KoMoDo)
But you wrote that the blocking attempt would be an error too. This is wrong!
No blocking attempt is a FAULT too

Hihi, no problem. Things like this just happens when two non-native speakers tries to discuss... :-D Well I lernt a lot. Its a long time ago since I looked in the official rules that much. ;-)

Ok. Just misunderstanding :) I thought that You think the same as @saku. Maybe somebody would learn something about rules from this discuss.

That this action is a fault is clear. I told that some posts later. But you wrote that the blocking attempt would be an error too. This is wrong! Just the completed block from a back-row player is a fault. A blocking attempt from a back-row player is no fault! Edit: Just a Libero is permitted to attempt a block. A back-row player is allowed to be part of a blocking attempt (but not a completed block).

Exactly. And it is one of the blocking faults included in part 14.6 "BLOCKING FAULTS". Any questions? :)

Participates means that the player is part of a block. In this case the player is part of a block which is completed (one blocking player touches the ball).

@KoMoDo "...completes a block or participates in a completed block" So what do You understand with "participates in a completed block"?
KoMoDoDE 11 1

Yes, 14.1.2 tells us what a blocking attempt is but 14.6.2 discribes that only a completed block (a block with a touch) is a fault. So it should be legal to block as a back-row player if their is no touch from the block! Their could be another rule that makes this permitted which I dont know...

Official rules:

14.1.3 Completed Block
A block is completed whenever the ball is touched by a blocker.

14.6 BLOCKING FAULTS
14.6.2
A back-row player or a Libero completes a block or participates in a completed block.

I think your wrong Someone. The official rules dont say anything about the blocking attempts from back-row players.

Really?

14.1.2 Block Attempt
A block attempt is the action of blocking without touching the ball.

I think your wrong Someone. The official rules dont say anything about the blocking attempts from back-row players. I also thought it would be a fault but it seems to be legal (to attempt a block as a back-row player if no one in this block touches the ball).

Well I'm not sure about the french rules in their leagues but after FIVB rules it would be an error if any blocking player touches the ball. Blocking faults: 14.6.2 A back-row player or a Libero completes a block or participates in a completed block. The back-row player participates in the block so it should be a fault (if the block touches the ball)

O.o I've never seen something like that! ahahahah! I agree, it wasn't fault because the opposite didn't touch the ball.. So, the spiker should have attacked on the opposite's hands to be 100% sure of scoring the point, right?

You can jump wherever you want, aslong as you don't touch the ball, ABOVE the net AND playing it over the net. Otherwise it would be very diffucult for a setter to jumpset the ball coming from the backcourt wouldnt it guys?

Yeah exactly, I was there and the referee didn't make a mistake because he didn't touch the ball so it's not illegal!

I think referee didn't make a mistake. I don't think that the opposite touched the ball in block. Than it's not a fault (or I think so).

lol yeah the right side was in the back court as you can see from the beginning, then after standing in front of the attack line covering a block, maybe he thought he forgot? he didn't touch the ball but I still think its illegal, am I correct? Not sure if theres a rule saying a backcourt player cant jump while in front of the attack line even if he feels like it..
