The U.S. Men’s National Team defeated Iran on Wednesday, 25:23, 25:23, 25:21 in the second match of the USA Volleyball Cup at the Anaheim Convention Center. Iran is playing in the United States for the first time in more than 35 years. The U.S. Men won the first match of the series on Saturday at the Galen Center at the University of Southern California. The U.S. Men led in kills (56-30), in blocks (14-3) and in aces (10-5). “I was a little surprised we were able to win that second set and ultimately win in three,” U.S. Head Coach John Speraw (Los Angeles, Calif.). “I think in general my guys played hard and I think we can learn a lot from this experience.” Opposite Carson Clark led all scorers with 16 points on 14 kills and two aces. Russell added 13 points on 10 attacks, two blocks and one ace. Much like at the Galen Center at USC, Iran had many supporters among the estimated crowd of 4,900. “We get so excited when we see such a huge crowd of Iranians here,” Iran setter Mehdi Mahdavi said. “We would like to win the game to make them happy, but we couldn’t do that.”

Yesterday evening, Iran won 3-2 (24-26, 26-24, 25-27, 25-20, 15-9). Personally speaking, I do not take these friendly matches so seriously. Speraw has rotated the team: three different teams in three matches. Given the weakenesses of Brazil and the absences of some Russian stars, I see the United States as the favourite nº 1 to clinch the world title in Poland next september... what do you think?
