Coming into round 5 of the Italian superliga, we are going to discuss some of the performance of the teams in the league and prediction deep into the season.

Major news: Lanza signed with Cisterna until December before he heads on to China. Opening match against Vibo scored 4 points and Lanza was substituted by Rinaldi in the second set. Michieletto was injured during the match against Padova, missing major matches against Perugia, Monza and Modena. According to the Volleybox roster for Padova, Ran Takhashi in?

Piacenza topped the charts after a perfect start. Piacenza managed to win against Lube, Milano, Modena, and Ravenna. With the inclusion of players like Brizard, Lagumdzija, Holt, Rossard and Recine, they managed to achieve great results. 5th place in aces per set at 1.56, 2nd in terms of attacking efficiency and 3rd in attacking percentage and 3rd in block per set. Even though their top player Aaron Russel has yet to recover from his hip injury, players like Rossard, Holt and Lagumdzija are very capable to carry the team to the win.

Although Vibo Valentia managed to take one win against Taranto in the first round of the league, Vibo Valentia struggled to take wins against their opponents. Losing games against Modena, Milano, Trentino and recently against Cisterna. Currently, they are tied at 9th in attacking efficiency with Verona at 0.39 efficiency, and 10th in attacking percentage at 45.9 %, slightly weaker performance than the 2020-2021 season and weak performance compared to other teams in the league. With fresh faces in nearly all attacking positions in the team, Douglas and Mauricio through the outside hitting position, Nishida through the opposite slot, Flavio, Candellaro and Gargiulo through the middles position, Saitta has to connect with the team again. Although there is high expectation for the Brazilians and Japanese players , the overall ball control and blocking of the team is slightly weaker than the team in the past. The reception and defense isn’t as strong with the team with Rossard and DeFalco and blocking wise it’s weaker without Cester and Chinenyeze. Overall, Vibo Valentia is struggling with ball control and block defence that directly impacts the setter Davide Saitta’s setting for the team. Going forward for the team, they will need to clean up their defensive system and reception, so that it’s easier for Saitta to set a ball in the system and in transition.

Modena is up to a very slow start, losing to Monza, and Piacenza. They only won against Vibo Valentia, but there are a few concerns rising within the team. Modena is predicted to be one of the stronger serving and attacking teams in the league, but they are struggling with service, currently only serving 1.09 aces per set at 10th place out of the 13 teams. Nimir Abdel- Aziz is currently hitting 0.09 aces per set, which is 90% lower than his serving record last year with 0.92 aces per set and is the best server in the league. Modena continues to struggle in other aspects of the games as reception has been a major issue. Leal, one of the newcomers of the team, is struggling with reception, which caused a lot of pressure on Rossini the libero and N’gapeth. Receiving at 15.8% perfection and only at 0.02 efficiency, Leal is one of the weakest receiver in the tournament, in addition to that, Leal is only hitting at 0.37 efficiency and 45.3 % attacking percentage, which is 0.11 points lower at efficiency and 9% lower in attacking percentage. Although N’gapeth is currently carrying the team with moderate statlines, hitting at around 0.4 efficiency with 49.4% attacking percentage and 0.55 ace percent, the team needs a shake up to live up to its potential.

Coming to the next few rounds, the ratings for the team:

  1. Perugia
  2. Trentino
  3. Piacenza
  4. Lube
  5. Modena
  6. Milano
  7. Monza
  8. Cisterna
  9. Padova
  10. Vibo Valentia
  11. Verona
  12. Taranto
  13. Ravenna

Nice analysis!

I'm surprised by Monza's performances. They are really tough opponent. They just beat Piacenza 3:0 today. I love how dzavoronok evolved - this season he looks really good. Also, Grozer is playing very well despite being not so young anymore. And most of all - I love their chemistry. Of all the teams that I've watched so far they and Trentino are the only two teams who seem to play with a lot of chemistry.
