Due to the pressure from China to drop Taiwan from participating in the Olympics, no country was willing to host AVC Continental Olympic Qualification until the last minute.

France hosted the Asian qualification less than a month before Olympics. Beyond the Taiwan issue, the North vs. South Korea match was a big rivalry at the time.
