She started playing for the national team when she was 13! Melissa Vargas has been awarded as Cuba’s Best Player of 2013. She celebrates her election as the best player of the year by the Cuban Volleyball Federation. Vargas, 14 years old, was chosen due to her performance in competitions such as the U-20 Pan American Cup, NORCECA games in the United States and China tournament. In the continental U-20 event the player, original from the province of Cienfuegos was chosen as the best in service, in the regional finals played in Nebraska she highlighted as spiker and in the “Asian Giant” was the revelation of the tournament. The award was given by the board of the Cuban Federation during the opening of the sixth edition of the Cerro Pelado Cup, which will end on December 20 at the National Volleyball School.

Full final match of World Championship boys under the age of 19. Sborna outclassed a surprisingly well-prepared Chinese squad on Sunday evening in Tijuana, Mexico. The new European champions of Russia were undoubtedly the biggest favourite in Mexico. Their team represents a mixture of talents, who are soon to among the world's senior elite. Pavel Pankov (7 aces in final match), one of the highest scoring setters and best servers in his age, grew up in a famous volleyball family, with both his parents and elder sister being involved in the game. Ilia Vlasov won the Best Blocker award at the European Champ, whereas the MVP and Russia's captain, Victor Poletaev scored 25 points in that match! Tang Chuanhang was the best scorer of China with 18 points while Xia Runtao had 15 points. It is the third gold medal for Russia in the history of the age-group, having won also in 1999 in Riyad, Saudi Arabia and in 2005 in Aljiers and Oran, Algeria. They also claimed silver medals as the former Soviet Union in 1989 and 1991 and a bronze in 2001.

Semi-final match of World Championship boys under the age of 19. It was a tough match for both teams between Poland and China. Battle between Zhang Zhejia and Bartosz Bućko. Poland's allegedly most talented player at this age scored 21 for his country in the semi-final match against China. The Chinese player (Zhang Zhejia) scored 15 points. Team from China scored 18 points of block; including 8 points by Li Yuanbo. Their rivals have scored 15 blocks. Match was watched live at "Gimnasio de Usos Múltiples" hall by 1 500 fans. The Chinese captain also praised both teams for their high level of play in the semifinal match on Saturday. Yu Yaochen, captain of China: "I am very glad for this victory against a strong team like Poland. They are very tall and it was very difficult for us to attack against their high block. We played at a very high level and very united".

Many expected that the match-up between the two Asian rivals would be tight, just like their encounters in the past, but the Koreans were betters against Japan in two matches. In the first game South Korea won 3:1. The Korean team made a lot of good actions and powerful spikes. Throughout the match, both teams tried hard to win. Superstar of South Korea NT: Sung-Min Moon in third set was injured. After that injury he was replaced by Seung-Suk Kwak. Captain of South Korea: Lee Sun-Kyo, said: "We spent four weeks in training camp. Our passion and spirit today was amazing, we particularly had strong will power for today’s match against Japan".
