USA - Russia (SET5)
The USA Men’s Volleyball team was back in the Walter Pyramid where 4,250 fans were on hand to see the first of two World League pool play games against Russia. The two countries showcased fantastic back and forth action before the Americans saved a five-set victory 25-17, 27-15, 20-25, 25-27, 15-12.
Russia was down 21-17 in the third set but came back to force a fifth set but that allowed American hitters Matt Anderson and Taylor Sander to cap off a huge night on the outside. Anderson led all attackers with 31 kills on 49 attacks while the newcomer Sander added 18 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Team USA took a 3-2 lead in the fifth set on a Sander kill and didn’t trial again.
Biriukov led the Russians with 20 kills while Zemchenok added 14 of his own.
