Fenerbahce Istanbul caused the first sensation of this year’s Champions League with their 3:2 (25:21, 28:30, 21:25, 25:23, 15:9) victory in the "Match of the Week" with Italy’s champions Lube Banca Macerata. It was only the first of six rounds of play in the "group of death" which also includes Belogorie Belgorod of Russia and Paris Volley, i.e. the winners of last year’s Champions League and CEV Cup, respectively.
Home team was led by the Serbian duo - Ivan Miljković made 19 points, while Miloš Nikić scored 18 points. On the other side, Jiri Kovar collected 18 points, while Giulio Sabbi added 17 points. "We played really well but we have to keep that same quality and intensity also for the next matches", commented Fenerbahce captain Arslan Eksi. "I am proud of these guys. They played very good tonight and they never gave up even in the most difficult moments", said their mentor Daniel Castellani.
