AVC Challenge Cup for Women vs Asian Women's Challenge Cup

This is weird and complex, but I don't think this 2023 version “Challenge” Cup belongs here

This “Asian Women's Challenge Cup” was a challenge cup for promotion to the AVC Cup – not a big deal

The 2023 version “AVC Challenge Cup for Women” (notice the “AVC” and where the word “women” is)  is a challenge cup for promotion to the FIVB Challenger Cup and ultimately the VNL

Leave it to AVC to name their tournaments this way LOL

The new 2023 version (The AVC Challenge Cup for Women) has FIVB ranking and was connected to the FIVB Challenger Cup here but got deleted with all the work a few of us put into it :(

And I believe it has to be a “new” tournament in order to connect to the FIVB Challenger Cup? Not sure about that

Also, I believe this Asian Women's Challenge Cup and the AVC Cup are both end-of-lifed

Yesterday I discovered that two identical tournaments were created on the web (one by the user avid and another by the user Bare-bo-ru). I looked for information on the internet to find out more about the competition that I had no idea until yesterday that it was being played and I found this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Asian_Women%27s_Volleyball_Challenge_Cup

and just start reading is this:

"The 2023 Asian Women's Volleyball Challenge Cup is the fourth edition of the Asian Women's Volleyball Challenge Cup"

Reading this I see that the "correct" tournament is Bare-bo-ru and I start the process of removing the tournament from avid.

Before removing it, I transferred correct information that was in the "bad one" and that was missing in the "good one".

I put the calendar, I completed the squads, I completed some data of players that were incomplete... etc.

It's true, I didn't transfer some team photos and also some match statistics, sorry about that.

The truth is that with the Asian competitions I am lost.

Because it is clear that it is the fourth edition..., but YOU ARE RIGHT that the winner will play the FIVB Challenger Cup 2023 to play the Volleyball Nations League in 2024, but how can we put it on the web?

It's like last year, when two competitions were played in the same competition. It was the 3rd edition Asian Women's Volleyball Challenge Cup (Hong Kong won it) and Princess Cup Volleyball Championship (Thailand U20 won it)

You are not alone in being a little lost re: Asian competitions. Like you, I read that wikipedia page and thought it was true …. but it is not the best for our purposes here at volleybox

The difference in the names of the tournaments I pointed out above are important

See:  https://mb.com.ph/2022/08/21/avc-cup-to-stake-fivb-points-starting-next-year/

So, I originally added this “AVC Challenge Cup” as the 2023 version of the AVC Cup.  But then talking with some friends in PHI and Malaysia they convinced me that their language is “right” but misleading:

"the AVC Cup for Women will now be held annually starting next year where precious points will be up for grabs.

The tournament, previously held every two years, will serve as qualification for teams that aspire to join the Challenger Cup."

They could have said the “Asian Women's Challenge Cup” (what we have here) will now be annual etc., but this Challenge Cup is a low level tournament that qualified teams for The AVC Cup

When I added it as the next version of the AVC Cup I couldn't connect it to the FIVB Challenger Cup. I asked for user @avid's help and he suggested we might need to make it a NEW tournament. So he quickly added the new tournament and connected it to the FIVB Tournament to see if it would work. And it did. I am responsible for that decision. @avid was just being helpful and quick

Also teams that are in VNL (like China, Japan, Korea, Thailand) cannot play in this tournament--so it would not be correct to make it the 2023 version of the AVC Cup

Bottom line: WE should consider this a NEW tournament, Wikipedia page is misleading. The AVC Cup and consequently this tournament are end-of-lifed

To put it another way: for our purposes here at volleybox this should be a separate tournament because even if you can connect this 2023 edition (4th edition perspective) that would also make it that the 2022 and previous editions would have been qualifiers for the FIVB challenger Cup – which is patently not true. They were qulifiers for the AVC Cup

@Justice as a comparison of the way wikipedia, AVC, and volleybox keep track of things in different ways, for example, the U18 Asian Championship.  You can see by the banner for that tournament that AVC considers it the 14th edition, wikipedia sort of does too…. because it used to be U17 until FIVB created new age categories. That didn't work for volleybox so it's the FIRST U18 here. (personally, I think this volleybox way is wrong but volleybox can't have an age restricted tournament that changes ages over time, or something like that, so I was way overruled lol)

Anyway, either way is fine for this tournament that about a dozen people will ever visit. I'd like to make it a new separate tournament so it can connect to the FIVB Challenger Cup, more than anything because for us Asian volleyball fans that is a super BIG deal ?

If you browse around the AVC site, the organization responsible for all this, they make it a habit of numbering all the tournaments. The 2022 version was the 3rd “AVC Women's Challenge Cup”. The 2023 version is NOT bannered as the 4th edition and is the “AVC Challenge Cup for Women” … it's subtle but telling difference

Now I understand the issue... I will change it.

They could "break their heads" putting the names of the tournaments...

The issue of ages, has been pending in volleybox for years... It is very URGENT that they fix the issue of the competitions from U16 to U23, because every year it is worse and worse, because erroneous information is being introduced on the web.
