After the conclusion of Tokyo Olympics, I have settle down a bit to think about what happened in the Olympics. Tokyo Olympics is definitely one of the most interesting and surprising Olympics to a lot of people, with many favorites fall short n the games, it is unpredictable and fun to watch.
The biggest winner of all is the European continent, with France and ROC (refer as Russia in the latter part of the article), taking Gold and Silver respectively in a 3:2 match. France coming into the Olympics games winning a bronze in VNL was not seen as favorites to take Olympics gold. During the preliminaries , France lost 3:0 against USA and 3:2 against Argentina. They were at the edge of repeating the run of Rio Olympics, but they won Russia 3:1 . They lost in a five setter against Brazil, but they earn a valuable 1 point against Brazil to secure their 4th place in the pool to advance into the quarter finals. Many were surprised that Poland lost in five, as they were predicted to be the favorites to win the games. France enter their first ever gold medal match by storming over Argentina in three. At the end, France won their first ever gold medal in a major World competition (Olympics, World Championship, World cup). France has a pretty good distribution of set to all three wing players, along with good blocking and defense mechanism, France took the game in five and won gold.
Argentina is a pleasant surprise to many, as they suffer a heavy penalty after COVID case impacted their preparation to the VNL. After finishing 9th in VNL, and COVID case impacted them, Argentina didn't seem to be favorites to qualify to the knockout phase along with France. Argentina managed to beat USA, Italy and Brazil in the games and they are the team that beats the medalist of the previous Olympics edition. Argentina played many of the games with mentality of “They have nothing to lose” and they were plenty relax in a lot of the games with high profile team like Italy, Brazil and USA.
USA were the victims of the “Pool of death” and they were knockout of medal contention after losing 3 games against, Russia, Brazil and most importantly Argentina. USA took France in 3 sets and looked amazing against France. But the struggle against Brazil and Russia prove USA to be more brittle than previously expected, and the game against Argentina is very critical to USA down fall. Holt and Smith struggles through the middles and the lack of better back up options through the middles blocking position proves to be the ultimate down fall of US team selections.
Poland suffered a huge blow against France. Even though they have a successful run in VNL and pool phase of Olympics, the lack of variety in set and poor management of the second outside hitter spot proves fetal to their team. Drzyzga fed most of the balls to Leon and Kurek, which made blocking easy for France and the lack of fire power from either Kubiak, Sliwka and Sememniuk from the second outside hitter spot proves to be very fatal in the fifth set.
