Club World Championship had an amazing finale as host team Sada Cruzeiro once again climbed to the top of the world for their third crown at the competition, this time with an unbelievable performance over Zenit Kazan in front of a packed Ginásio Divino Braga in Betim. MVP William Arjona and scorers Evandro Guerra and Yoandy Leal were the main actors of a team that played astonishingly as a whole. The three of them represented the gold medal winners in the competition Dream Team, as well as libero Sergio Nogueira. Wing spiker Wilfredo León and middle-blocker Artem Volvich featured for Kazan while Trentino’s Simone Giannelli and Bolívar’s Pablo Crer also joined the elite.

The Cuban middle-blocker joined Sada Cruzeiro in 2016/17. He was twice a national champion in South Korea with Ansan OK Savings Bank (2014/15 and 2015/16), a runner-up at the 2014 edition of the Club World Championships with Al-Rayan of Qatar, when he was elected the best blocker of the tournament. Simon was champion of the Italian Cup (2013/14) and of the Challenge Cup (2012/13) with Piacenza. With the Cuba national team, he was a silver medal winner in the Champions Cup in 2009 and in the 2010 World Cup, both with finals against Brazil. He was also the NORCECA champion and first in several other tournaments, from 2005 to 2010, playing for Cuba.

Sada Cruzeiro brought Brazilian fans to ecstasy once again as they successfully dealt with European champions and major threat Zenit Kazan from Russia. The rematch of 2015 gold medal game finished with the same score than a year ago - a 3:1 for the title owners that secured the top Group A spot for them, with a spotless 3:0 record so far. Kazan, despite the loss, still depend on their own to be among the four best teams of the competition, as the winner between them and Taichung Bank will qualify right behind Cruzeiro. The Asian champions enjoyed a first-time victory at the tournament on Thursday opener, taking down Egypt’s Tala’ea El-Geish also in four sets. Although the mission for the Chinese Taipei side against Kazan might look impossible, a win would earn them the ticket. On the only Group B match to be played on Day 3, Trentino defeated Argentina’s Bolívar 3-1 to stand above all on the ranking. However, the plot is far from solved as only Minas Tenis Clube holds no chance of taking any of the two semifinals spots. The Italian side, Bolívar and the also Argentinean UPCN reach the final day still dreaming.
